Ivan Liptak

About Mr. Ivan

Ivan is a highly skilled Guitar and Piano instructor with a passion for imparting knowledge of performance and composition across diverse music genres. His musical journey started in his childhood in New York City, where he first learned to play the bass. Over time, Ivan transitioned to the guitar, receiving instruction both within and outside of school, and participating in a student ensemble.

His high school years in DC sparked an interest in jazz, leading to private tutelage under local guitarist, Greg Loman. As part of the jazz ensemble at Sidwell Friends School, Ivan honed his skills further. He also attended a comprehensive five-week jazz guitar program at Berklee College of Music.

In college, Ivan's musical pursuits continued to flourish. He studied under renowned classical guitarist Phillip De Fremery at Amherst College, serving as a teaching assistant for the music theory sequence, and participating in a range of performance ensembles as both a performer and leader. He also enriched his experience at the Summer Institute of Contemporary Performance Practice at the New England Conservatory.

Ivan earned his BFA in guitar performance from Berklee College of Music, studying under the mentorship of Amanda Monaco, a respected New York-based jazz guitarist. He has since been actively teaching and performing in the DC area. Notably, Ivan performs solo and collaborates with the group Spiral Agnew. Continually striving to refine his craft, Ivan continues his studies under Anthony Pirog.

Given Ivan's extensive training and experience in different music genres, he is ideally positioned to guide students at all levels towards their musical goals. Committed to fostering skill and creativity, Ivan is enthusiastic about helping students excel.
