About Ms. Da'Shawn
Da’Shawn Covington, professionally known as Brown’Sugar Productions, is
a Washington, D.C.–based music producer, entrepreneur, and educator with
over a decade of experience in the music industry. A graduate of Johnson
C. Smith University, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music
with a concentration in Music Business and Technology (Class of 2018),
Da’Shawn blends her technical expertise with a deep passion for
creativity and mentorship.
Da'Shawn created her brand Brown’Sugar Productions when she was 15 years
old. Her great-aunt Aunt Gladys gave her that name when she was a baby.
Her brand Brown'Sugar Productions focuses on empowering women and young
creators in a traditionally male-dominated field—using music as a tool
for education, confidence, and self-expression.
Spending so much time growing up as a little girl in the recording
studio with her dad, Da'Shawn has now developed a lifelong passion for
sound and creativity through releasing projects that feature DMV artist,
being recognized as the only female on the DMV Top 50 Music Producers
list, and recognizing her work being featured on BET+, VH1, and MTV. She
is also a new proud member of the Recording Academy’s D.C. Chapter.
Through her teaching, Da’Shawn focuses on empowering the next generation
of young creators—helping them build confidence, express themselves, and
develop real-world skills in music production and technology.
