Alex Galiatsatos

Alex's Bio

Alex is a performer, composer, producer and educator emerging in the DC and Maryland music scene. A native to the area, Alex discovered his musical talents early in his youth. As a young child, the sounds and styles of classic rock and folk captured Alex’s interests.  Playing the licks of Jimi Hendrix, mimicking the riffs of Led Zeppelin, strumming the progressions of Bob Dylan and harmonizing to the melodies of Simon and Garfunkel were just some of the ways he built his knowledge as a self-taught performer and songwriter.

At age 14, Alex was accepted as a student at the Levine School of Music where he was placed under the direct guidance of Levine’s Jazz program director, Gary Prince. It was here that Alex was introduced to the art form of jazz improvisation and theory. Growing a strong passion for the art form, Alex was the recipient of the Outstanding Jazz Soloist award at Festival Disney, a national music competition held in Disney World.

Furthering his development, Alex attended the University of Maryland where he ultimately earned his bachelor of music degree in jazz performance. During his time at UMD, Alex was selected to be the guitarist for the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra, performing in New York City under the direction of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Ted Nash. Alex also performed as part of the school’s lead big band and chamber jazz group, performing traditional jazz standards, modern arrangements and even original compositions. He also honed his craft as a collaborating artist by working as an accompanist for fellow music students spanning many styles from jazz to classical. During his final years at school, Alex formed a classical guitar and flute duet with UMD flute instructor Kathy Trahan, a group often performing Alex’s original arrangements and compositions.

Alex was a founding member of progressive rock band Bare Left with fellow singer-songwriter Kai Orion. The group performed all over the DC, Maryland and Virginia area, taking the stage at venues such as The Fillmore and Rams Head Live. Alex was a co-producer of their Bluebeard EP.

As a freelance musician, Alex works throughout the area as a pit orchestra guitarist, session player and event guitarist. Working with companies including Act Two and the McLean Player, Alex has played shows such as Les Miserables, West Side Story, Hair Spray, Children of Eden, Spring Awakening, Footloose and many more in theaters around town including Arena Stage. As a session musician, Alex has been featured on albums by fellow DC musicians including pianists Chris Urquiaga and Rico Huff, vocalist Carla Scott and singer-songwriter Kai Orion.

Most recently, Alex has launched a singer-songwriter project under the name Alexander Gallows. Pulling from the wealth of styles and inspirations of his past, Gallows’ songwriting has a totally unique depth and brings a modern flare to a retro sound. Described as “A sound that needs to be heard by millions,” by the Songwriters’ Association of Washington, Alexander Gallows can bring beauty and sophistication to the traditional guitar and voice pair as well as dazzle the audience with intricate arrangements utilizing loops and effects, weaving thought provoking lyrics with toe tapping rhythms.

In 2017, Alexander Gallows released his debut album “Solitude”. This 8-track album was entirely written, performed and recorded my Alex and is a testament to the social, poetic and musical capabilities of his songwriting. Alexander Gallows is currently the featured, in-house musician at the Barking Mad Café in Gaithersburg where he performs every Saturday.
